The best moveset for Empoleon in Pokémon Shining Diamond and Shining Pearl

Out of all Sinnoh debutants, Piplup is the one who ends up with the most unique strike. The Water and Steel-type Empoleon is a fantastic Pokémon that can demolish opposing teams with ease. High stats help this cause, but it really comes down to the moveset players give Empoleon in Pokémon Shining Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Empoleon has a diverse move pool, but players should stick to these four moves for their journey through Sinnoh in the latest Nintendo Switch adventure.

As with any starter, you also want to use Empoleon Strike and its stats. It has a high special attack and a wide variety of items to further enhance the one-move strike. For Empoleon's moveset, we've chosen two moves to give him an attack bonus of the same type and two more to help him cover his weaknesses.

    • Surf
    • Earthquake
    • ray of ice
    • Cannon Flash

With this moveset, you have three 100 precision moves that can see you through any battle. Surf, Ice Beam, and Earthquake might not be the strongest moves, but we decided to prioritize accuracy over power. If you want the power instead, swap them with Hydro Pump and Blizzard or use one or the other.

Surfing is an obvious choice, as it's a high-powered Water-type special attack with 15 total power. With Empoleon's high Sp. Atk stat, Surf comes in more than once. This also applies to Ice Beam, which can cover Empoleon's weakness to Ground-types.

Speaking of Earth-types, we went with Earthquake to give Empoleon some cover against Electric-types, one of his other weaknesses. Earthquake is the best ground move in Pokémon Shining Diamond and Shining Pearl and Empoleon can still put it to good use even though it's a physical move.

Finally, we are left with Flash Cannon. This is arguably the best Steel type move in Sinnoh and it allows Empoleon to use his Steel type. Although its accuracy is not 100, it is still high enough to warrant its use in high profile situations.

All in all, a fantastic and versatile choice to kick off your adventure in the Sinnoh region.
